Fyksesund Fjord-to-Mountain Hike – A Remote Hardangerfjord Adventure by Boat
See all dates and details for this experienceAbout the experience
Travel by RIB into the roadless hamlet of Botnen and hike a historic mountain trail with sweeping views over Fyksesund, Hardangerfjord and Folgefonna. (New in 2026!)
This is one of Hardanger’s most unusual day hikes.
Your adventure begins with a scenic RIB boat ride deep into the narrow Fyksesund fjord, where you arrive in Botnen — a tiny hamlet with no road connection. From here, you follow a historic mountain path once used by local farmers moving between the fjord and their summer farms in the highlands.
The reward is a full day of dramatic contrasts: steep valley walls, open ridges, powerful silence, and far-reaching views over Fyksesund, Hardangerfjord and, on clear days, the Folgefonna glacier.
If you are an experienced hiker looking for a real fjord-to-mountain adventure few travellers know about, this is the hike for you.

From fjord to mountain in one unforgettable day
Join us for a guided full-day hike on one of the most distinctive routes in Hardanger. We start in Øystese and travel by RIB through the dramatic Fyksesund fjord to Botnen, a remote hamlet tucked deep between steep mountains and only accessible by boat.
From Botnen, the hike follows a historic trail used for generations by local farmers and families. The ascent through Botnadalen is steep and rewarding, gradually opening into a high ridge landscape with panoramic views over the narrow fjord below and the wider Hardangerfjord beyond.
Along the way, your guide shares stories from life in this isolated fjord community — how people travelled, worked and lived between mountain and sea. This is not just a hike, but a rare way to experience Hardanger through its landscape, history and local knowledge.
The route ends in Hovland, where our minibus brings you back to Øystese.
