About the experience

A day with a reindeer herd is a phenomenal way to get up close to the semi-nomadic life of the Sámi people who practice reindeer herding. You will have the opportunity to take part in their everyday life as a herder.

Reindeer herding involves controlling the herd and getting them to graze. The herder must be able to anticipate the animals' movements based on their knowledge of the reindeer's natural behavior during different seasons.

In almost untouched Norwegian nature, you will be able to experience reindeer up close and be served traditional sámi food in a lavvo

Weather can vary from freezing cold to brilliant sunshine, making this experience truly special.

When you come down from the mountain, you will be served a traditional Sami meal at our restaurant. In cozy surroundings, you will be served dinner dishes made from reindeer meat and local ingredients.

Additional Info

The trip lasts for 8 hours including transportation. You meet at Sami Siida in Øvre Alta. From here, you will be transported by car into the wilderness, up to the mountains, to Kautokeino municipality. The trip takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. From here, you will be transported by snowmobile to the reindeer herd. This part of the trip lasts about 15 minutes. If you have a snowmobile license, you can drive yourself. Return down from the mountain at 3:00 PM. Arrival in Alta at 5:00 PM. Dinner is served upon arrival.

This is an outdoor activity. In winter, it can be cold in Kautokeino with temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees, so you must dress according to the weather. We recommend thermal underwear, good shoes, a wool sweater, a warm hat, and gloves. We have coveralls that guests can borrow.
