About the experience
Join us on a spectacular five-day skitour between cabins in the magnificent mountain landscape of Vest-Jotunheimen!
The Tinderuta is a skitour through Vest-Jotunheimen, from Fondsbu to Turtagrø, established as an alternative to the Høgruta Jotunheimen with better chance of good snow. This trip is for the skiers who wish to experience Norway's wildest alpine landscape by skis in untouched snow. During the trip, we aim for great 2,000-metres peaks, and we plan the route so that we find good and safe snow.
During the Tinderuta we stay at five different cabins, all very charming. Most of them includes served meals but one is self-served which means we cook the food ourselves. We start at Fondsbu, visit unattended Olavsbu, before going to Leirvassbu and Krossbu. The last day we end the trip with a skitour in the famous alpine area; Hurrungane.
Tinderuta day by day
Day 0
Meeting at Fondsbu with dinner at 1900. There is a tracked vehicle from Tyin which must be booked privately. This evening we get to know each other and the journey ahead, go through essential equipment and clothing, and plan the next day.
Day 1
After a breakfast and preparing lunch, we go to Olavsbu. Along the way, we aim for Mjøledalspiggen (2138 masl.), possibly also via Høgbrothøgde (1821 masl.) on the way. Olavsbu is an unattended tourist cabin, so at this cabin we have a quiet evening and cook dinner ourselves.
Day 2
From Olavsbu we go to Krossbu via one or several beautiful ski mountains that can be combined if time allows. Alternatives are Skardalstinden (2100 masl.) and Midtre Høgvagltinden (2066 masl.). At Leirvassbu, a good dinner awaits you in pleasant company.
Day 3
From Leirvassbu, a great day awaits in the glacier landscape towards Krossbu. We are aiming for a visit to Storebjørn (2222 m), before we go over Bjørneskaret to Leirbrean. There we find several options for fine alpine ski mountains, such as Sokse (2189 masl), Skeie (2118 masl) and Kalven (2034 masl), before we drop down towards Krossbu.
Day 4
From Krossbu, the trip continues up towards Sognefjellet and the mountains Steindalsnosi (2029m) and Fanaråkken (2068m). Here we find several options, and a good combination is to start with Steindalsnosi before ending the day with 1100 hm down from Fanaråkken to Turtagrø via Helgedalen. Here, we are served perhaps the best meals of the trip in historic mountain surroundings.
Day 5
The Tinderuta ends in the cradle of Norwegian mountain sports: Hurrungane! If the conditions allow we head towards Ringstind, the most classic ski peak in the area, before sliding out of Ringsdalen and ending our adventurous journey.
We reserve the right to make changes to the day's plans according to current weather, skiers, avalanche danger and the capacity of the group.
Additional Info
This could be the trip for you
Tinderuta requires good skiing skills and good physical shape. The trip can be set up with varying degrees of difficulty, but there will be some steep sections, and the conditions can be variable. The route includes travelling on glaciers and in potentially avalanche-dangerous terrain. The different stages are up to 1,500 meters of altitude up to 16 kilometers each day. Several of the stages require good visibility and stable snow conditions in order to be completed. The alternative is a branched trail in the valleys. We would therefore strongly recommend light alpine ski touring equipment.
